Precision Nursing and Personalized Care: Integrating Genomics, Biomarkers, and Patient-Centered Approaches
Abstract
ABSTRACT The rapid advancement of omics technologies, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care bio-sensing is catalyzing a paradigm shift in modern clinical practice, transitioning healthcare from a generalized, one-size-fits-all model to precision nursing and personalized care. Precision nursing integrates individual genomic profiles, epigenetic modifications, real-time physiological biomarkers, and socio-environmental determinants into nursing care plans, allowing for highly targeted symptom management, risk prediction, and therapeutic interventions. This paper presents a comprehensive research synthesis and empirical analysis evaluating the operationalization of precision nursing across oncology, cardiology, and metabolic disease management. Utilizing a mixed-methods multi-center cohort study framework (N = 850 patients across three tertiary teaching hospitals in South India) combined with advanced predictive modeling, we quantify the impact of nurse-led genomic risk stratification and biomarker-guided monitoring on patient outcomes, therapeutic adherence, and adverse event mitigation. Our findings demonstrate that integrating pharmacogenomic screening into nurse-led medication administration reduced adverse drug reactions by 38.4% (p < 0.001) and improved medication adherence rates by 27.6% over a 12-month follow-up period. Furthermore, real-time biomarker tracking via non-invasive continuous biosensors significantly decreased 30-day hospital readmission rates among acute heart failure patients (HR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.49–0.78). However, successful translational integration requires overcoming substantial barriers, including genomic health literacy gaps among nursing staff, complex ethical-legal-social implications (ELSI), data privacy vulnerabilities, and institutional resource constraints. This study provides an actionable operational framework, a decision-support algorithm, and policy recommendations designed to empower bedside nurses as critical drivers of personalized precision medicine.
