Culturally Competent Nursing Practice in Global Healthcare Settings: Challenges and Strategies
Abstract
As international migration and globalization increase, nurses often find themselves caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Culturally competent care is critical to delivering effective, respectful, and ethical healthcare worldwide. This paper explores frameworks and practices that enhance cultural competence among nurses, examining training methods, institutional policies, and patient-centered approaches. Drawing from global nursing experiences in multicultural urban hospitals, refugee camps, and remote indigenous communities, the study reveals common challenges such as language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and bias. It also provides evidence-based strategies that improve communication, trust, and patient outcomes, including the use of cultural mediators and ongoing education in transcultural nursing.
